Press release   September 7, 2010			Voith Turbo New M-Coupling Protected Against Thermal Destruction Hundreds of motor-driven luxury boats are lying at anchor in yacht harbors such as Porto Cervo, the famous resort at the Sardinian Costa Smeralda. People who want to set off on such a yacht expect nothing but undiluted sailing fun - without strong vibrations, excessive noise and driveline breakdowns on the waters. A new highly flexible coupling from Voith Turbo developed specifically for marine applications ensures this availability and provides more comfort both above and below deck, especially in the lower speed ranges. Some ship propulsion systems show their weaker points already during the slow departure from harbor, where the permitted speed for boats is usually 3 knots: strong oscillations in the drive result in noticeable vibrations both above and below deck. In addition, there are also noise emissions that are quite undesirable for anybody who wants to sail in an elegant watercraft. The new highly flexible coupling for marine applications minimizes torsional vibrations and therefore not only increases cruising comfort: in systems prone to torsional vibrations, highly flexible couplings are subject to high dynamic and thermal loads. High ambient temperatures and perpetual stress variations generate very high temperatures in the coupling. If the elastomers used in conventional couplings fail to dissipate this heat sufficiently, the Elastomer parts in the coupling rapidly wear out. And once the coupling no longer works, the entire driveline is interrupted, resulting in a total breakdown. With the M coupling, Voith Turbo has developed a coupling that is protected against thermal destruction, even if it operates at full load due to high torsional vibration amplitudes. It is installed as a blind assembly coupling between motor and flanged marine gearbox and fitted with a systems-inherent fail-safe device.
