Optimum Propulsion Despite Flat Wadden Sea Shipping Lane To mark its 125th anniversary, Wyker Dampfschiff-Reederei (W.D.R.) has launched the first double-ended ferry in its fleet. "Uthlande (V)" will move passengers and vehicles in island traffic between Föhr, Amrum and the mainland. In order to be able to utilize full drive power in the flat water region "North Friesian Wadden Sea", the vessel was fitted with four slightly modified Voith Schneider Propellers (VSP). Each of the four VSP has an input power of 470 kW, allowing a sailing speed of 12 knots. As this speed is hardly ever needed during scheduled transfer trips, the speed reserves can be utilized for consumption and emission-optimized driving. Thanks to this reserve, delays or operation in heavy weather conditions can then be compensated by higher speeds over short periods, so that the ferry always runs on schedule. Due to the flat shipping lane, the new ferry of Wyker Dampfschiff-Reederei, in regular service since mid-June 2010, has been fitted with four Voith Schneider Propellers type 16R5 EC/100-1. For the application, the normal length of the VSP blades of 120 cm was shortened to 100 cm. Thanks to its lower operating draught of only 1.75 meters compared to conventional ships, the "Uthlande" is able to maneuver without problems in the ferry ports of Dagebüll, Wyk and Wittdün, even if the waters are extremely low (maximum draught 1.85 m at 500 t load). According to the shipping company, the capacity of the 75.88 meter long and 16.40 meter wide double-ended ferry capable of carrying 1 200 passengers and 75 cars is significantly higher than that of its ferries "Nordfriesland" and "Rungholt", until recently now the largest vessels in the fleet. The double-ended design eliminates previously required reversing maneuvers, which proved to be very time consuming. The ship was built in Germany's oldest shipyard, Sietas Werft Hamburg. The first-time decision of W.D.R to use the Voith Schneider Propeller as a propulsion system, was made not least because of positive experiences with the VSP by the shipping company Norden-Frisia. Their ferry FRISIA IV, launched in 2001, is also fitted with VSP of the same size.
